Why Locals Love Leroy and Lewis Barbecue
Located in the vibrant heart of Austin, Leroy and Lewis Barbecue redefines Texas barbecue with a sophisticated, Michelin star-worthy touch that both locals and visitors crave. Specializing in smoked meats that boast deep, smoky richness and tender, melt-in-your-mouth textures, this barbecue haven is a playground for the senses.
Meat lovers will be immediately drawn to the star dishes: the impeccably smoked brisket, the robust flat iron steak, and the luscious beef cheeks, all praised for their bold flavors and expert preparation. The L&L Burger is a standout—featuring a smoked brisket patty nestled on a toasted potato bun, layered with gooey cheese, caramelized grilled onions, tangy pickles, and a signature burger sauce that harmonizes each bite into a savory delight. The Barbacado—a half avocado generously topped with spicy barbacoa, queso fresco, and jalapeño salsa—offers an exciting twist on classic Tex-Mex ingredients, served with either potato bread or pickles for textural contrast.
The sides elevate the meal further with unexpected yet satisfying offerings. From the crisp Kale Caesar Slaw with Parmesan and crunchy croutons, to the vibrant House Made Kimchi that delivers a punch of spicy, salty funk—these sides bring freshness and complexity to every plate. The Refried Beans crowned with queso fresco and the comforting Braised Cabbage with sausage provide hearty, soul-warming counterpoints. And for those craving a nostalgic Texas snack, the Texas Red Chili Frito Pie loaded with onions, cheddar, cilantro, and pickled smoked jalapeños delivers down-home comfort with a gourmet flair.
After the savory feast, dessert lovers can indulge in the surprising Cheddar Cheesecake—boasting a Ritz cracker crust, luscious apple butter, and a sharp cheddar crisp that creates a perfect balance of sweet and savory to round out the meal memorably.
The dining atmosphere at Leroy and Lewis mirrors Austin’s eclectic spirit: warm, inviting, and bustling yet refined. Friendly servers complement the experience with attentive, knowledgeable service that makes you feel like you’re in trusted hands whether arriving early or braving a weekend crowd. Guests praise the efficient line movement and the option to order from an “anytime menu” for quicker bites, ensuring no one misses out on quality barbecue.
Though some diners noted that certain items like the chili and cornbread are nice but not show-stoppers, the exceptional quality of the meats and creative sides make Leroy and Lewis a compelling destination. Prices lean premium, but the generous portions and elevated culinary execution justify the splurge for a truly unforgettable Texas barbecue adventure.
For anyone passionate about barbecue or eager to explore Austin’s culinary gems, Leroy and Lewis Barbecue serves a masterclass in smoky flavors, inventive pairings, and authentic Texan hospitality, securing its place as a must-visit culinary landmark.

The brisket, the flat iron, and beef cheeks were very very good, definitely the best on the menu. Oh, and the burger - delicious. The sausage too was pretty tasty, better than average. Everything else? A little overhyped, like the Barbacoa. The cornbread was okay, the chili was comforting but not special, I liked the salad and the beef tallow chips, but not something to go way out of your way for but definitely order them with the meal. I liked the dessert with the pecans the most.

Friday at 4:45 pm was an awesome time to arrive. A reasonable selection of meats was still available and the line was about 10 minutes. Excellent service for getting dessert later. High quality meats and unusual sides. The tritip was superb. I didn’t love the chicken, but I guess it is tough to make chicken memorable. The sausage was great. My favorite was Terry Black’s, but I think this place edges it out.

Finally made it down to Leroy and Lewis bbq with my partner in food crime - my husband! Note to all: if you go on Saturday, it gets VERY crowded!! The bad news - it was a 2 hr wait on the line for the traditional barbecue options. The good news - we could go to the anytime menu area (either bar, or ordering area midway through the restaurant. We chose the anytime because we were hungry! We ordered the onion rings, Hog Fat Cornbread, L&L burger (1/2lb brisket), and banana pudding tiramisu (for a to-go dessert). Onion rings were good, light buttermilk batter, with an alabama white sauce (horseradish type of heat). They do tend to fall apart - so keep a napkin handy! Hubs loved the cornbread - very crumbly, but moist, with a sprinkle of sea salt on top. It's made from BSM hopi blue cornmeal - so it's BLUE! Burgers were very tasty and not packed - so less dense. I prefer mine cooked more than rare, but Jake was helping us out in many ways (so good about my food restrictions also!) - and got me a new burger cooked more toward the medium side! It had sautéed onions on top - very tasty! Hubs loved the burger also! I have to mention Jake again - SUCH a nice guy and so helpful! We mentioned that we had really wanted to try the beef cheeks, but no way were we waiting on the line (NOTE: do get there when they open if going on a weekend!). He actually brought us three pieces to try!!! And it was so moist, smoky, tender, and well seasoned! We were just amazed at how helpful the staff are! The dessert? Jeff gave it two thumbs up! The pudding definitely had the banana punch - and an extra flavor..either vanilla or banana extract. Overall - great Q and four thumbs up!!

It is definitely Michelin star worthy. The staff was amazing, the food was delicious, and the place was neat and clean. We arrived at 10, for an 11 am open, and were first in line!!!! With getting there early! The line moved quickly, for those waiting. Unique sides that were great! Didn’t have dessert, we were foo full!

I was in town visiting a friend, and someone suggested we try Leroy and Lewis Barbeque. I expected a local hole-in-the-wall spot with good BBQ. Then I pulled up and saw the newer, fancy signage and realized this place has a Michelin Star. Wow. I never thought brisket, barbacoa, and BBQ could reach that level. The service was great the whole time. Yes, it is pricey at about $46 per pound for brisket, but the food and the experience felt worth it. Even after eating brisket, I could not pass up the daily special: a $10 brisket burger to go. It was the best $10 hamburger I have ever had. Our friend said the line is usually out the door on weekends. We went on a Monday, so there was no big wait, but the parking lot was still full. The ordering is simple: you pick what you want, how much you want, then order by the pound and add sides. I am sharing a few photos and a video to help show the vibe, the friendliness, and what to expect. It is also awesome that they started as a food truck in 2017 and grew into a Michelin Star restaurant.

Everything we tried was absolutely delicious, but their tri tip was super juicy and packed with incredible flavor. The LG burger is a must, perfectly cooked, flavorful, and unforgettable. The entire experience was made even better by the amazing staff. Huge thanks to Allison and Mathias for explaining everything on the menu and helping us choose the best options. They were incredibly friendly, patient, and knowledgeable. You can really feel the passion and hospitality here. Can’t wait to come back!

We came here straight after work on a Thursday. There was no line so we were able to order straight away and our food was out in 10 minutes. We had the chicken fried steak which was delicious! The gravy and fry on the steak were both seasoned really well and the steak had a nice crisp on it. We had the German Cobbler and Banana Pudding tiramisu desserts. The cobbler was just too salty so it was a confusing eat, but the Banana pudding tiramisu was heavenly. We also had the cornbread app and it was super good; it came with a nice bacon butter that complemented it well. The atmosphere is nice and open, pretty no frills but I appreciate that food is the focus.

Deserves a top ranking for best BBQ in Texas. The beef cheek and flat iron are standouts that are worth getting there early to ensure you get it. Brisket was fantastic as well. The sides are a standout as well. The miso glazed carrot was delectable. Frito pie takes me back to youth. Kimchi is a great way to cut the fatty, unctuous meats. Everything was well balanced. Kudos all around.
